I have an Astilbe in a 1/2 whiskey barrel that I planted last year as a background plant. This year it's taken over half the barrel, & I was wondering if I could divide it & plant some of it elsewhere in the garden.

I've done some reading/researching & find some people say spring, some say fall, some say anytime. Anyone here with tried & true info?

I've done both. The standard time for this type of clumping perennial is early spring, even late winter. Dividng or moving going into a harsh winter has a risk of damage or loss.
